Anthony Gordon is set to complete a £69.3m move to Barcelona after undergoing a medical at the Catalan club, departing Newcastle United as one of the Premier League's most improved forwards over the past three and a half years.

The England international's ambition to reach the very top of the game was never a secret. Former Newcastle team-mate Matt Ritchie described Gordon as someone who "dreams big" and possesses the "controlled arrogance" that defines elite footballers. "Working with Eddie [Howe] and all the coaches in Newcastle, he couldn't have fallen into better hands," Ritchie said. "I don't think the stage or badge will change him as a person. He will always have this inner drive, this mentality, to be the best."

Why Barcelona chose Gordon over Rashford

Barcelona had the option of converting Marcus Rashford's loan from Manchester United into a permanent deal for £26m — less than half Gordon's fee. Yet the La Liga champions prioritised the Newcastle forward, who is three years younger than Rashford, offers similar versatility on the left and through the middle, and commands a lower wage.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has long admired Gordon's high-tempo style. Flick values work rate as much as technical ability, and Gordon ranks in the top 40 Premier League forwards for possession won in the final third, high pressures applied, and high pressures in the opponent's half this season.

A player who thrives in Europe

Gordon's Champions League record was the statistic that truly caught the eye of Barcelona — and rival suitors Bayern Munich. Only Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe, with 15 goals, and Bayern Munich's Harry Kane, with 14, outscored Gordon's tally of 10 Champions League goals this season.

According to Opta, the numbers reveal a striking contrast between his European and domestic form in 2025-26. Gordon's shot conversion rate in the UEFA Champions League stood at 38.5 percent, compared to 12.5 percent in the Premier League. He also averaged a goal or assist every 64 minutes in Europe, against one every 227 minutes in domestic competition. He attempted more dribbles (3.9 per 90 minutes), earned more touches in the opposition box (6.1), and recorded a superior dribble success rate (45.5%) in European fixtures.

Gordon himself pointed to what he sees as a difference in style between the two competitions. "The Champions League is a bit more of an older style game," he said earlier this season. "It's a bit more football based. Teams come and try and play proper football."

The challenge ahead at Barcelona

The transition from performing in Europe's biggest cup competition to delivering consistently in La Liga week after week will define Gordon's time at Barcelona. He will face fierce competition for a starting berth, with Raphinha among those he must displace.

Ritchie, for one, has no doubts about his former team-mate's readiness. "That will be a challenge he will relish to take his game to the next level," he said. Gordon's remarkable Champions League campaign — played out under the lights at venues including the Nou Camp itself — suggests he is built for exactly the stage that now awaits him.
