Arsenal Close to Securing Spain Star Ona Batlle on Free Transfer

Arsenal are on the verge of completing a move for Spain international Ona Batlle, with the Barcelona defender expected to arrive as a free agent when her contract expires at the end of the season.
BBC Sport first reported in January that Batlle had held advanced talks with Arsenal regarding a pre-contract agreement. Those discussions have since progressed, and the Gunners are growing increasingly confident that the deal will be wrapped up early in the summer window.
A statement signing for the Gunners
The 26-year-old's impending arrival is considered one of the most significant transfers Arsenal have made in recent years, reflecting a sharper and more proactive approach to squad building. With Republic of Ireland full-back Katie McCabe set to leave the club, Batlle has been identified as a priority target to strengthen the defence.
Batlle is widely regarded as one of the finest defenders in world football. She spent three seasons at Manchester United between 2020 and 2023 before moving to Barcelona, and has expressed a desire to return to the Women's Super League.
Her trophy cabinet tells its own story — she was part of the Spain squad that lifted the 2023 World Cup, played a pivotal role as Spain reached the Euro 2025 final (where they were beaten by England on penalties), and helped Barcelona win the Women's Champions League in 2024.
More arrivals expected
Batlle is unlikely to be the only high-profile addition this summer. England midfielder Georgia Stanway, 27, is also expected to join Arsenal when her Bayern Munich contract concludes at the end of the campaign. Stanway moved to the German club from Manchester City in 2022 and has since won three Bundesliga titles, in addition to her two European Championship medals with England.
Reports have also linked Switzerland midfielder Geraldine Reuteler with a switch from Frankfurt to Arsenal, pointing to a busy few months ahead for the north London club.
New direction under Taylor
The flurry of activity follows Arsenal's appointment of former England striker Jodie Taylor as the club's first Women's technical director in January. The role was created with the explicit aim of planning across multiple transfer windows and ensuring sustained squad improvement.
Arsenal have also moved to secure existing talent, announcing a two-year contract extension for Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius earlier this week.
