Austria Name Arnautovic in World Cup Squad for First Finals Appearance in 28 Years

Austria have named veteran striker Marko Arnautovic in their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending a 28-year wait for the nation to appear at the tournament's finals.
Arnautovic, 37, earns his place despite now playing club football for Red Star Belgrade in Serbia. The former West Ham United and Stoke forward is Austria's most-capped player, having scored 47 goals across 132 international appearances — a remarkable record that underscores his enduring importance to the national side.
Familiar faces from European football
Borussia Dortmund pair Marcel Sabitzer and Carney Chukwuemeka are also included in the squad. Sabitzer previously had a spell at Manchester United, while Chukwuemeka — a midfielder like Sabitzer — joined Dortmund after time at Aston Villa.
Real Madrid defender David Alaba will captain the side, who are managed by Ralf Rangnick, the former Manchester United interim boss now firmly established as Austria's head coach.
A tough group awaits
Austria find themselves in Group J, where they will open their campaign against Jordan before facing two significantly more demanding opponents in Argentina and Algeria. The Algeria clash will be particularly noted by African football fans, as the Desert Foxes aim for a deep run in the tournament.
