Bafana Bafana's Winless Streak Extends After Frustrating Goalless Draw Against Nicaragua

South Africa's preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another setback on Friday as Bafana Bafana were held to a goalless draw by Nicaragua, ranked 131st in the world, in an international friendly.
Despite dominating possession and territory across large stretches of the match, Hugo Broos's side struggled to carve out clear scoring opportunities against a compact, well-drilled Nicaragua defence that refused to buckle.
Penalty miss proves costly
The clearest chance of the first half arrived in the 17th minute, when Kamohelo Sebelebele drove down the flank and cut a low cross into the six-yard box. Themba Zwane found himself unmarked just three yards out but failed to connect — a moment that set the tone for a deeply frustrating evening.
Tshepang Moremi tested his fortune with a free-kick from the edge of the area in the 34th minute, but the effort sailed over the bar and wide without troubling the goalkeeper.
The most glaring opportunity came just before half-time. Sebelebele drew a penalty in the 42nd minute after clever footwork inside the box, and Lyle Foster stepped up two minutes later with the goalkeeper beaten — only for his well-struck effort to cannon back off the post.
Second-half wave fails to break through
Broos turned to his bench at the break, introducing Sipho Chaine, Oswin Appollis, Iqraam Rayners, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Pule Maseko in a bold bid to unlock the Nicaragua defence. The changes injected fresh urgency, and South Africa pushed their opponents deeper with sustained spells of attacking play.
Further reinforcements in the form of Nkosinathi Sibisi, Jayden Adams, and Bradley Cross were sent on as Bafana Bafana hunted the elusive breakthrough, but the finishing touch that was so desperately needed never materialised.
The best chance of the second half fell to Mofokeng in the 81st minute, whose free-kick was beaten away by the Nicaragua goalkeeper. Even as the clock ran down, South Africa never eased off — yet Nicaragua's resolute backline and goalkeeper held firm to claim a hard-earned point.
What comes next for Bafana
South Africa face Jamaica in their final preparatory friendly on 5 June, before the stakes rise sharply: Bafana Bafana open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Mexico on 11 June, a fixture that now carries significant pressure after this unconvincing display.
