Barcelona Enter Gordon Race with £70m Bid as Bayern Munich Rivalry Heats Up

Barcelona have submitted an offer in the region of £70m for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, entering the race alongside Bayern Munich for the England international's signature.

Talks between Barcelona and Newcastle are understood to be at an advanced stage, though the Magpies are holding firm for a fee above £75m. Newcastle are simultaneously in discussions with Bayern Munich over the 25-year-old, who Sky Sports News reported earlier this month had attracted serious interest from the German champions.

Gordon's season at Newcastle

Gordon ended the campaign as Newcastle's top scorer, netting 18 goals across the Premier League season. Despite that remarkable return, he featured in none of the club's final six league matches amid swirling transfer speculation, and was an unused substitute in their last four games as the club appeared to protect him ahead of a potential summer departure.

The winger signed a long-term contract extension at Newcastle in October 2024 and has four years remaining on that deal — giving the Magpies considerable leverage in any negotiation.

A summer of change at St. James' Park

Gordon is among several high-profile players who could depart Newcastle this summer. Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento have also attracted interest from English and European clubs. Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson acknowledged recently that the club may need to sell before making major signings of their own.

Gordon has not formally requested a transfer, but Newcastle are prepared to listen if a substantial offer arrives. Liverpool came close to signing him in the summer of 2024, though whether they will re-enter the running remains to be seen.

The Rashford connection

Barcelona's pursuit of Gordon adds an intriguing subplot involving Marcus Rashford. The Manchester United loanee has expressed a desire to stay at Barcelona beyond this season and is reportedly willing to accept a pay cut to make it happen. United, however, are understood to be unwilling to extend another loan arrangement and consider the £26m purchase option to be a fair price.

Should Barcelona opt not to trigger that option due to their financial constraints, they may instead look to Gordon to reinforce the left side of their attack. Both Gordon and Rashford are part of Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 — and, as Sky Sports analyst Callum Bishop noted, each may be playing to impress Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick and the club's hierarchy in equal measure.

Bayern Munich's attacking roster already includes England captain Harry Kane alongside former Premier League players Michael Olise and Luis Diaz, making Gordon a natural fit should he ultimately opt for Germany over Spain.
