Barcelona have entered negotiations with Newcastle United over a potential transfer for winger Anthony Gordon, joining Bayern Munich in the pursuit of the England international.

The La Liga champions have confirmed their interest in Gordon and are understood to be in active talks with the Magpies. Despite financial constraints in recent years, Barcelona are believed to be in a position to fund moves through revenue generated from player sales.

Valuation gap still a factor

Bayern Munich opened formal discussions with Newcastle some time ago, though BBC Sport previously reported that the two clubs remain apart on their respective valuations of Gordon. Barcelona's entry into the race adds a new dimension to what is shaping up to be one of the summer's most competitive transfer battles.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson set the tone back in March, making clear the club would only part with players on "our terms." With Gordon's contract running until 2030, Newcastle are in a position of strength and are expected to demand a minimum of £70 million for the 25-year-old.

Gordon left on the bench as farewell loomed

The former Everton forward emerged as Newcastle's top scorer this season yet found himself benched for the final four Premier League matches. Head coach Eddie Howe admitted his selections were made with an eye on the future — a decision widely interpreted as preparation for life without the winger.

At Craven Cottage on the last day of the season, Newcastle fell to a 2-0 defeat against Fulham. In what many felt was a poignant moment, supporters in the away end sang Gordon's name, the atmosphere carrying the weight of a potential goodbye.

When Howe was asked whether Gordon had featured for Newcastle for the final time, he offered a measured response.

"I don't know, as I said in the build up to the game. You can never predict what's going to happen. He obviously goes to the World Cup now so we wish him well."

Newcastle face a summer of rebuilding

After a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League, Newcastle face significant squad reshaping this summer. Gordon is considered the most likely of the club's key players to depart, with any incoming transfer fee expected to help fund that rebuild.

Barcelona's interest is not limited to Gordon alone. Hansi Flick's side are also tracking Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Chelsea striker Joao Pedro. Additionally, the Catalans hold an option to sign Marcus Rashford — Gordon's England team-mate — on a permanent basis for £26 million following his loan spell from Manchester United.
