Jo Bonfrere, the Dutch coach who led Nigeria's Under-23 side to Olympic gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, has declared he holds no doubts that the Super Eagles will defeat Jamaica in Saturday's 2026 Unity Cup final at The Valley in London.

The 78-year-old, speaking exclusively from his base in the Netherlands on Friday evening, acknowledged that modern football is rarely predictable — but insisted Nigeria carry enough quality and depth to secure their first Unity Cup title.

A legend's confidence

Bonfrere, whose greatest managerial achievement remains Nigeria's stunning 3-2 victory over Argentina in Atlanta, was emphatic that the Super Eagles' pedigree gives him every reason to believe.

"Super Eagles are a strong team, not only in Africa but in the world," he said. "They have excellent players — Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi — all playing in top European clubs."

"Yes, I am confident. I have no fears. With good organisation and tactics, Super Eagles can beat any team."

He stressed that discipline, tactical organisation, and clinical execution would ultimately decide the outcome of the final.

How both sides reached the final

Nigeria advanced to the decider with a commanding 2-0 win over Zimbabwe, with Femi Azzez netting twice — once in each half. Jamaica reached the final by the same scoreline against India, thanks to goals from Courtney Clarke and Kaheim Dixon.

A tight head-to-head record

Nigeria and Jamaica have faced each other six times in friendly and invitational fixtures. The Super Eagles have claimed two wins, Jamaica one, with the remaining four matches ending level. Bonfrere was unmoved by the closeness of that record, insisting Nigeria enter Saturday's match as clear favourites.

A Nigerian victory would give the Super Eagles a third win over Jamaica in the all-time series. A defeat would draw the rivalry level at two wins apiece across seven meetings.
