César Azpilicueta, the former Chelsea captain and one of Spanish football's most decorated defenders, has confirmed he will hang up his boots at the end of the current season, drawing the curtain on a career stretching across nearly 20 years.

The 36-year-old shared the news on Friday morning through a heartfelt letter posted on X, addressed directly to the sport that defined his life.

"Dear football, Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it's time to start a new chapter in my life," Azpilicueta wrote.

He acknowledged the weight of the moment, noting that even with time to prepare, putting the words down was no easy task. "After 20 seasons, many people have played an important role in my career," he added.

From Pamplona to Stamford Bridge

Azpilicueta traced his love for the game back to his childhood in Pamplona, where he first kicked a ball with schoolmates — never imagining the journey that lay ahead. He expressed gratitude for every dimension of that journey: the victories, the defeats, and above all, the relationships forged along the way.

"Football has given me so much: it has taught me values like teamwork, sacrifice, humility, and respect. It has granted me the opportunity to explore new countries, new cultures, and new languages," he wrote, closing his message with: "My heart is full of gratitude and memories I will carry with me into whatever comes next. With love, César."

A Chelsea icon

Azpilicueta spent 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge, making over 500 appearances and winning 9 major honours for Chelsea. His consistency, leadership, and unwavering commitment made him a firm favourite among supporters in West London.

He departed Chelsea in 2023, joining Atlético Madrid for two seasons before moving to Sevilla last summer — a final chapter to a career built on professionalism and longevity.
