Chelsea Demand £120m for Enzo Fernandez as Star Pushes for Exit

Chelsea have placed a £120 million price tag on midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who is understood to want to leave the club following their failure to qualify for European football next season.

According to BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella, Fernandez has made clear his desire to depart Stamford Bridge, with Real Madrid identified as his preferred destination. Manchester City have also been mentioned as a potential landing spot, though neither move appears straightforward.

A record signing pushing for the exit

Fernandez, 25, is Chelsea's record signing, having arrived for £106 million in 2023. He has captained the side on several occasions this season, making his apparent desire to leave all the more significant for the west London club.

This is not the first time the Argentina international has hinted at a move away. Earlier this season, comments made to media in his home country during international duty suggested he was uncertain about his future and spoke warmly of the prospect of living in Madrid. Those remarks earned him a two-match suspension under then-manager Liam Rosenior.

The financial reality behind the fee

Chelsea's £120 million valuation is not arbitrary. Their transfer model, in place since BlueCo acquired the club in 2022, depends heavily on player sales generating profit. According to The Athletic, Fernandez carries a book value of approximately £77.6 million — meaning any sale below that figure would register as a loss on the club's accounts. Chelsea are believed to prefer keeping the midfielder but remain open to offers in that region.

The club's finances are already under scrutiny after a season that ended in disappointment — a defeat at Sunderland on the final day condemned them to 10th place in the Premier League, ending their European ambitions despite billions spent on players in recent years.

Obstacles facing potential suitors

Real Madrid would need to raise considerable funds through player sales before they could contemplate a bid, and they are also reported to be targeting Manchester City's Rodri. Meanwhile, Manchester City's midfield budget this summer may be largely committed to a reported move for Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, further complicating any pursuit of Fernandez — despite the potential coaching connection with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca now at the Etihad Stadium.

Fernandez is valued at €90 million by Transfermarkt. Whether any club is prepared to meet Chelsea's asking price remains very much in doubt.
