Dani Carvajal to Depart Real Madrid After 23-Year Association

Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal will leave the club at the end of the current season, bringing to a close a 23-year association with the Santiago Bernabeu that spans two separate spells and an extraordinary haul of silverware.

The 34-year-old right-back is out of contract at the end of June and will depart having made 450 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals. He is widely considered one of the most decorated players in football history, with 27 titles to his name.

From academy graduate to club legend

Carvajal first joined Madrid's academy in 2002 before making his senior debut in 2013, following a season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen that convinced the club to trigger a buy-back clause and bring him home. What followed was a career that defined an era.

He lifted the UEFA Champions League six times — one of only five players to achieve that feat — and is the only player to have started in all six finals he won. He added four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey triumphs, six Club World Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, and four Spanish Super Cups to his collection.

At international level, Carvajal earned 51 caps for Spain, helping the national side win the Nations League in 2023 and the European Championship in 2024. He was included in the FIFPro 2024 World XI, collected The Best FIFA Men's World XI award in 2024, and was named the best player in the 2024 Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, a match in which he scored the opening goal.

Injuries and the twilight years

The latter stages of his career were disrupted by serious physical setbacks. A cruciate ligament tear in October 2024 was followed by another significant knee injury a year later. The arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool last summer further limited his opportunities, restricting him to just 892 minutes in La Liga this season.

Despite those difficulties, the emotional bond between Carvajal and the club — and its supporters — has never wavered. Madrid president Florentino Perez paid tribute to the outgoing captain in terms that left little doubt about his standing at the club.

"Dani Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy. Carvajal has always exemplified the values of Real Madrid. This is and will always be his home."

An era comes to an end

Carvajal's departure follows those of other defining figures from Madrid's golden generation — Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, and Luka Modric among them. As each left, Carvajal took on greater responsibility, eventually assuming the captaincy and becoming the dressing room's emotional anchor during a period of transition.

At his peak, he was regarded as one of the most complete right-backs in world football, combining defensive discipline with attacking intelligence in a way that made him central to the tactical structures of managers including Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane. Madrid frequently looked exposed in his absence, a testament to how difficult he was to replace.

Real Madrid, who will finish the season without a major trophy for the second consecutive year, are set to honour Carvajal during their final La Liga fixture of the season — a home match against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, 23 May.

He will leave as one of the greatest right-backs in the club's history and a central figure in one of its most successful periods.
