DR Congo Relocate World Cup Preparations to Belgium Amid Ebola Outbreak

The Democratic Republic of Congo have moved their pre-World Cup training camp out of the capital, Kinshasa, after an Ebola outbreak in the east of the country forced a change of plans. Preparations will instead take place in Belgium as the squad readies itself for their first World Cup appearance since 1974.

The Ebola upsurge has claimed an estimated 139 lives from around 600 suspected cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the situation as a "public health emergency of international concern", while clarifying that the outbreak has not reached pandemic level.

Jerry Kalemo, a spokesperson for the DR Congo national football team, confirmed to international media that pre-tournament friendlies in Europe would proceed as scheduled. The team are set to face Denmark on 3 June and Spain on 9 June ahead of the World Cup finals.

A rare strain with no vaccine

The outbreak has been caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola — a rare strain for which no vaccine currently exists. The WHO has warned that developing a suitable jab could take as long as nine months, presenting a significant challenge for health authorities working to contain the spread.

Back in DR Congo, officials remain focused on managing the crisis, leaving the football federation to coordinate the national team's preparations from Europe. The move to Belgium ensures the squad can train without disruption while the country navigates one of its most pressing public health challenges in recent years.

DR Congo's return to the World Cup stage marks a historic moment for the nation's football, and the squad will be determined to ensure off-field circumstances do not derail their tournament preparations.
