Ex-Nigeria Star Hails Super Eagles' New Generation After Zimbabwe Win

Former Nigeria international Obafemi Abiodun has heaped praise on the Super Eagles' uncapped players following their 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final, played in London on Tuesday night.
The result ended a run of draws between the two nations, marking Nigeria's first win over Zimbabwe in their recent head-to-head meetings.
New faces impress Abiodun
Speaking to Brila FM, Abiodun reserved particular admiration for head coach Eric Chelle, crediting him with identifying and integrating fresh talent into the senior squad.
"99% of those players that played against Zimbabwe are players that we have never seen before. But I know Tosin Durosimi, the one who came in, and Okonkwo, because I have seen him severally in action for Wrexham."
Abiodun was effusive in his assessment of what the debutants produced on the pitch, describing the display as a long-awaited breakthrough.
"Honestly, look at what the boys did — their performance is what I have been talking about for a very long time. I am really impressed. This is talent. Kudos to Chelle for unearthing those new players."
Poland and Portugal on the horizon
Nigeria's attention now shifts to a pair of international friendlies. The Super Eagles face Poland on 3rd June 2026 at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw, before travelling to take on Portugal on 10th June 2026.
The match against Portugal — known as Seleção das Quinas — will serve as the European side's final fixture before they depart for North America and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria are expected to use both fixtures to sharpen their squad and build momentum ahead of upcoming assignments.
