From Premier League Glory to League One: Leicester City's Ten-Year Fall from Grace

The Dream is Over
Leicester City have been relegated to League One — and the pain could not be more stark. A 2-2 home draw against Hull City on Tuesday night sealed a second consecutive drop, sending the 2016 Premier League champions into English football's third tier for the first time since 2009.
Fans at the King Power Stadium did not hold back. Players were booed onto the pitch before kick-off, and at the final whistle, supporters chanted "You're not fit to wear the shirt" as the squad collapsed to the ground in disbelief.
A Night of False Hope
For a brief moment, it seemed like fate might offer Leicester a lifeline. Goals from Jordan James and Luke Thomas quickly overturned an opener from Hull City's liam millar, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.
But oli McBurnie's second-half strike crushed those dreams. With seven points separating Leicester from safety and only two matches remaining, there was simply no way back.
Manager Gary rowett's honest verdict
Leicester boss Gary rowett refused to pin the blame on a handful of games. "You don't get relegated over three or four games, you get relegated over a season," he said bluntly.
"This club won the Premier League not too many moons ago. That was an incredible high. I think we can be equally as disappointed with how poor this moment is."
rowett described this as "the horrible part of the journey of a football club" — a phrase that captures the brutal reality of a club in freefall.
A Fall That Has Been Years in the Making
The path to this moment has been swift and painful. After claiming the Premier League title under the legendary claudio ranieri in 2015-16, Leicester reached the Champions League quarter-finals and lifted the FA Cup in 2021. They even reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Conference League.
Then the collapse began. relegated from the Premier League in 2023, they bounced back immediately — only to struggle again in the top flight. Manager Steve Cooper was sacked after just 12 games, and his replacement ruud van nistelrooy could not stop the bleeding.
Earlier this season, the club was docked six points for breaching spending rules, making an already desperate situation nearly impossible.
Leicester have now won just one game in their last 18 — a statistic that tells the whole story.
Chairman Under Fire
Chairman aiyawatt srivaddhanaprabha faced chants of "Get Out of Our Club" throughout the match and after the final whistle, as supporters gathered outside the ground to protest.
In a statement released on the club's social media channels, he accepted full responsibility. "As Chairman, that responsibility sits with me. There are no excuses," he said. "I am truly sorry for the disappointment we have caused."
The Financial Cost of the Drop
Relegation to League One carries massive financial consequences. According to deloitte, average revenue for League One clubs in 2023-24 was just $12.2 million — roughly 25% of what Championship clubs earn, and a fraction of the $422 million average enjoyed by Premier League clubs.
rowett warned that decisive action is needed: "Big decisions will have to be made in the next few weeks. The Championship spits out reputations every year — it's a tough league."
For a club that once rubbed shoulders with the elite of European football, the road back will be long, expensive, and uncertain.
