Glasner's Premier League Ambitions Leave Bayer Leverkusen Waiting as Options Narrow

Oliver Glasner's search for a new club is growing more complicated, with his preferred options in England drying up and a move to Bayer Leverkusen yet to tempt him, according to a report by Sport Bild.
The Crystal Palace manager confirmed earlier this year that he would leave Selhurst Park at the end of the season. He could yet depart on the highest of notes — Palace are preparing for the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano, which would represent the club's first European trophy if they lift it.
Premier League doors closing
Glasner's preference was reportedly to step up to a bigger Premier League club following his largely successful tenure with Palace. That path, however, has narrowed considerably. Manchester United chose to retain Michael Carrick, while Chelsea moved quickly to appoint Xabi Alonso.
With fewer openings in England available, Bundesliga sides have begun to circle. Bayer Leverkusen have made an approach, though they have yet to receive a response from Glasner's camp.
Leverkusen keen but Glasner unmoved
Glasner spent time in Germany before joining Palace, most notably guiding Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory, and his reputation in the Bundesliga remains strong. That history makes Leverkusen's interest understandable.
The Werkself endured a difficult season after their remarkable 2024 Bundesliga title under Xabi Alonso, finishing sixth under Dane Kasper Hjulmand, who is expected to leave this summer. Leverkusen have reportedly set a deadline to appoint their next manager before the end of the month.
Yet a switch to Leverkusen could be perceived as a lateral move rather than a step forward. While the club have qualified for the Europa League next season, Crystal Palace would earn the same if they win the Conference League final — and Glasner's ambitions are believed to stretch even further, toward Champions League football.
A patient game
For now, Glasner's attention remains fixed on Palace's European final. Beyond that, the Austrian is thought to be prepared to wait for the right opportunity, even if it means sitting out the opening months of next season rather than accepting a role that does not meet his ambitions.
