Hakimi Named in Morocco's World Cup Squad Despite Champions League Injury

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has been included in the Atlas Lions' squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the injury he picked up during the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Bayern Munich.
The Paris St-Germain right-back, 27, has been sidelined since the first leg of that tie on 28 April — a match Paris St-Germain won — but was photographed in training on Tuesday ahead of Saturday's Champions League final against Arsenal, offering encouragement over his fitness.
A squad packed with European talent
Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has called upon a strong contingent of European-based players. Manchester United's Noussair Mazraoui, Crystal Palace defender Chadi Riad, Fulham's Issa Diop, Sunderland winger Chemsdine Talbi, and Real Madrid playmaker Brahim Diaz are all included in the selection.
Nayef Aguerd, now at Marseille, Sofyan Amrabat of Real Betis, and Stuttgart midfielder Bilal El Khannouss — both formerly of Manchester United and Leicester respectively — also feature. Former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech, however, has been left out of the squad entirely.
Group C challenge awaits
Currently ranked eighth in the FIFA world rankings, Morocco carry significant pedigree into this tournament. The Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they fell to France in a historic run for African football.
Morocco were also declared winners of last year's Africa Cup of Nations after Senegal had their victory overturned following the Teranga Lions' walk-off during the final — a decision that drew widespread controversy.
For the 2026 World Cup, Morocco have been drawn in Group C alongside Scotland, Brazil, and Haiti. Their opening group fixture against Steve Clarke's Scotland side is scheduled for 19 June.
