Hamburg have until June 15 to decide whether to make Nigerian winger Philip Otele's loan move a permanent transfer, according to a report by Complete Sports Nigeria.

Otele joined the Bundesliga club in January on a temporary basis from Swiss side FC Basel, with Hamburg paying a €1 million loan fee to secure his services for the second half of the season. Should they wish to retain him beyond the summer, the North German club must pay an additional €4.5 million to trigger the purchase option.

According to Bild, no formal decision has been reached yet, with talks between the parties pencilled in for May.

Red card clouds Otele's debut season

The winger's campaign has not been without difficulty. He was recently sent off during Hamburg's derby defeat to Werder Bremen and is now serving a two-match ban as a result.

Across nine appearances for the club, Otele has contributed one goal and one assist — a modest but promising return for a player still adapting to German football.

Head coach Merlin Polzin has nonetheless spoken favourably about the 20-year-old's potential.
