Harry Maguire Left Out of England's World Cup Squad After Tuchel's Snub

Harry Maguire says he is "shocked and gutted" after Thomas Tuchel left the Manchester United centre-back out of England's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Tuchel is set to formally announce his 26-man selection on Friday morning.
Maguire took to social media to express his disbelief: "I was confident I could played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision."
The defender, who has earned 66 caps for England, added: "I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer."
A season of recovery at Old Trafford
Maguire had worked hard to reclaim his place at Manchester United, starting 14 of their final 16 Premier League matches under manager Michael Carrick — a significant turnaround after losing his position during Ruben Amorim's spell in charge.
His restored club form earned him a return to the England setup in March. He featured in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay and came off the bench in the 83rd minute of the 1-0 defeat to Japan, offering Tuchel an extended look at his capabilities.
Tuchel pointed to rivals ahead of Maguire
Despite those appearances, Tuchel had offered little encouragement regarding Maguire's World Cup prospects. Speaking after the Uruguay fixture, the England head coach acknowledged Maguire's qualities while making his squad hierarchy clear.
"I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central-defender play. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and a weapon for set-pieces. I haven't changed my mind, but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile."
Tuchel named Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, and Trevoh Chalobah — citing Chalobah's mobility as an advantage over Maguire — as well as John Stones among those he rated higher, despite Stones dealing with injury.
England's World Cup schedule
England depart for the United States on Monday, June 1, ahead of warm-up fixtures against New Zealand on June 6 and Costa Rica on June 10 (both at 9pm UK time). They will be based at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri throughout the tournament.
Tuchel's side open their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 17 in Dallas, before facing Ghana on June 23 in Boston — a fixture that will carry enormous significance for African football supporters. They wrap up their group stage with a match against Panama on June 27 in New York-New Jersey.
The final of this historic first 48-team World Cup is scheduled for July 19.
