Chelsea defender Jorrel Hato has welcomed Xabi Alonso's arrival at Stamford Bridge, declaring that the club made the right call in appointing the Spaniard as their new manager.

Speaking to the club's official website after Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Tottenham, Hato made clear he is eager to work under one of the most decorated names in modern football.

"I think Chelsea made a good decision to get Xabi Alonso. I'm excited, I knew him as a player and watched him growing up at Liverpool and Real Madrid," Hato said.

The young defender also pointed to Alonso's remarkable spell in club management as proof of the new boss's credentials.

"He did very well at Leverkusen too, and they became champions, and he was at Madrid. He's a big name, so I'm very excited."

Alonso guided Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title before his appointment at Chelsea, where he has signed a four-year contract.

Hato also addressed the tactical question of where he might fit under the new manager, showing a flexible attitude that could serve him well during the transition.

"I've played in a back three and a back four, for me I don't care about where I want to play. I just want to play."
