Manchester United Target Sandro Tonali and Ederson as Casemiro Replacements

Manchester United are preparing for life after Casemiro, with the club understood to have identified two midfield targets ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio.

The Brazilian veteran is set to make his final appearance for United on Sunday, bringing an end to his time at Old Trafford. Despite struggling for consistency at points during his stint, he departs with considerable goodwill — not least for his role in a strong second half of the season under manager Michael Carrick, who guided the club to a third-place finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League.

Tonali in the frame

The first name on United's radar is Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. The Italian has been one of the more dependable figures at St James' Park since his 2023 arrival, even after serving a suspension linked to a betting violation that kept him sidelined for several months.

Tonali's future has attracted growing speculation given Newcastle United's underwhelming campaign as a whole. Arsenal are also reported to have an interest, which could trigger a bidding contest for his signature. Newcastle will not sell cheaply — Tonali has at least three years remaining on his contract, and any deal is expected to command a substantial fee.

Ederson — not that one

Should Tonali prove too expensive, United appear to have a second option ready. Atalanta midfielder Ederson — not to be confused with the Manchester City goalkeeper — is widely expected to leave Bergamo this summer, with only one year left on his current deal.

The 26-year-old has been at Atalanta since joining from Salernitana in 2022, and has earned a reputation as an energetic, all-action presence in midfield. He holds 3 caps for Brazil but missed out on a place in his country's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Atletico Madrid have also been credited with interest in the player, meaning United may need to move with purpose if they wish to secure him.

With Carrick now tasked with building a side capable of competing across multiple competitions, securing midfield reinforcements this summer is set to be a priority for the club.
