Jose Mourinho is heading back to the Santiago Bernabeu, with Real Madrid confirming a two-year agreement to re-appoint the Portuguese manager as head coach — 13 years after his first spell at the club.

The move comes after a turbulent end to a trophyless season for Real Madrid, whose dressing room has been beset by off-field controversy. Álvaro Arbeloa has been serving as interim manager since Xabi Alonso was dismissed in January, just seven months into the job.

Announcement expected after final fixture

Real Madrid face Athletic Club in their final match of the season on Sunday, after which an official announcement is expected. Mourinho is then scheduled to be presented to the media in Madrid the following week. His contract includes an option for a third year.

Mourinho wrapped up his season with Benfica on Saturday, overseeing a 3-1 victory over Estoril that sealed third place in Liga Portugal. Remarkably, Benfica went through the entire league campaign unbeaten under his stewardship.

Four coaches set to make the move

According to Sky Sports News, Mourinho will bring four members of his coaching staff from Benfica to Madrid with him. A clause in his Benfica contract — signed just 8 months ago — permits him to leave the club for a fee of £2.6 million.

Agent Jorge Mendes conducted negotiations with Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, with whom Mourinho retains a close relationship dating back to his original tenure at the club. Pérez's decision to turn to his former manager reflects a desire to restore stability and structure to a fractured squad.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning the Liga title in the 2011-12 season. His return will be one of the most high-profile managerial appointments in European football this summer.
