Nuno Espirito Santo Faces West Ham Exit as Relegation Fallout Begins

West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo is in talks with the club's senior hierarchy on Monday as both parties assess the consequences of relegation to the Championship, with widespread expectation that he will part ways with the club.
Nuno declined to confirm whether he would remain at London Stadium after the Hammers dropped out of the Premier League for the first time since 2011. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nottingham Forest manager had signed a three-year contract with West Ham in September.
A season undone by an early collapse
Despite a more encouraging run of form toward the end of the campaign — capped by a 3-0 final-day victory over Leeds United — West Ham were ultimately condemned by a dismal start to the season. A sequence of 10 games without a win, stretching from early November to mid-January, proved impossible to recover from.
Chairman David Sullivan and vice-chairman Daniel Kretinsky are expected to be the dominant voices in Monday's meeting as the club weighs up its managerial future.
Financial strain deepens with the drop
The financial implications of relegation are severe. West Ham sources have indicated the club stands to lose around £200 million in income at a time when its finances are already under considerable pressure. The Hammers recorded a £104 million loss in their most recent accounts, covering the period to 31 May 2025, and are forecast to post another significant deficit this season.
Player sales appear unavoidable in these circumstances. Midfielder Mateus Fernandes has attracted interest from Manchester United, who have identified him as a target in central midfield. Captain Jarrod Bowen is also attracting attention from multiple Premier League clubs, though the forward was reluctant to discuss his personal situation following the Leeds game.
