Premier League Braces for Summer Managerial Overhaul With at Least Five Clubs Changing Coaches

The Premier League is heading into one of its most turbulent managerial summers in recent memory, with at least five clubs confirmed to be changing their head coach and several others still undecided on their dugout future.

Man City: the end of an era

Pep Guardiola's decade-long reign at Manchester City is over, and Enzo Maresca has been lined up as his successor. The announcement came ahead of City's final match of the season, with the title race already settled.

Maresca had previously informed Chelsea last autumn that Manchester City had approached him about replacing Guardiola — a manager he served under as assistant during the 2022/23 campaign. Having departed Chelsea acrimoniously in January with three-and-a-half years still remaining on his contract, Chelsea's legal team will be monitoring his next appointment closely, with compensation potentially owed.

Man Utd: Carrick gets the permanent role

Manchester United ended weeks of speculation by handing Michael Carrick a two-year contract ahead of their final fixture at Brighton. Carrick had taken over following the sacking of Ruben Amorim and proceeded to guide United into the Champions League, securing third place with a game to spare.

Since arriving in January, Carrick accumulated 2.29 points per game — the best return of any Premier League manager during that period — and recorded his 12th win in 17 matches on the final day. Technical director Jason Wilcox ultimately put forward Carrick's name after the club ran a thorough and discreet process involving other candidates.

Liverpool: Slot stays, but change is coming

Arne Slot is expected to remain as Liverpool head coach next season after the club secured Champions League qualification. However, the campaign raised serious questions, with Liverpool finishing fifth after winning the title the previous year despite investing more than £400 million in new players.

The underwhelming defence of their title did not sit well with supporters, and performances drew criticism from within the squad — including departing Mohamed Salah. Even with Slot staying, a significant rebuild is anticipated at Anfield, with Andy Robertson among those set to leave.

Chelsea: Alonso takes charge

Chelsea have appointed Xabi Alonso as their permanent manager, replacing Liam Rosenior, who was sacked in April just three months after succeeding Maresca. Notably, Alonso has been given the title of manager — not head coach — a distinction that reflects his experience and the broader role he will play in shaping the club.

Alonso begins on July 1 and will work closely with Chelsea's sporting directors and ownership on recruitment, squad planning, and club culture. Chelsea also held interest in Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva before settling on Alonso, citing his character, integrity, emotional intelligence, and leadership as decisive factors.

Bournemouth: Rose replaces Iraola

Marco Rose has been appointed as Bournemouth's new head coach following Andoni Iraola's departure when his contract expires on June 30. Iraola led Bournemouth to their finest-ever Premier League season — finishing sixth and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League — making the transition all the more striking.

Iraola remains without a club for next season, despite interest from Chelsea and Athletic Club. Crystal Palace retain him as their preferred target, while AC Milan have also approached his representatives about taking charge next season.

The clubs still undecided

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe appears likely to continue despite a difficult season that ended in a bottom-half finish. An ongoing review is expected to shape the club's direction over the summer, with recruitment described by Howe as the primary focus.

At Fulham, Marco Silva is in contract talks with the club hierarchy, his deal expiring on June 30. Silva has not ruled out departing, with interest from Benfica and at least one other club. He was also considered by Chelsea before they moved for Alonso.

Crystal Palace face a vacancy from July 1 when Oliver Glasner's contract ends. Iraola remains their preferred choice, with Lens head coach Pierre Sage, Ipswich's Kieran McKenna, and Coventry's Frank Lampard also on their list. Glasner, meanwhile, has stated he rejected numerous offers and will not engage in new discussions until after the Conference League final.

At Leeds United, Daniel Farke has one year left on his contract after guiding the club to a 14th-place finish on 47 points. Farke has said he wants the club's ownership, the 49ers, to match his ambitions before he agrees to a new deal, and confirmed early talks have begun in what he described as an open and honest atmosphere.
