Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United supporters not to set their sights on a Premier League title challenge in Michael Carrick's first full season as manager, warning that the squad still requires substantial reinforcement before such ambitions can be entertained.

The Manchester United legend acknowledged the significant strides Carrick has made since taking charge — most notably steering the club back into the UEFA Champions League with a third-place finish — but insisted that patience remains essential.

"I think where Man United have been over the last few years has been very difficult for the fans to find some happiness in it," Rooney told talkSPORT. "But I think since Michael went in, I think there's hope and belief again within the Man United fans."

Champions League return sparks optimism

Rooney credited Carrick with bringing composure and renewed confidence to a club that had endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford. He praised the contribution of new signings during the campaign but stressed that further investment this summer is a prerequisite for any serious title push.

"Now back in the Champions League, and hopefully they go and sign a few players who can help them try and go the next step," he added.

Owen backs United to challenge

Not all former professionals share Rooney's cautious outlook. Former England striker Michael Owen has identified Manchester United as one of two clubs capable of pushing Arsenal for the title next term — alongside Manchester City.

"I think a challenge next season is only going to come from Manchester," Owen told Metro. "Man City will be strong, even if Pep leaves — they ran Arsenal very close this season and have a good group of young players."

Owen went further, pointing to United's recent form as evidence of a club transforming under Carrick's leadership. "It's been a while but Manchester United can be a title contender under Michael Carrick. You look at their form since he arrived and it's definitely one of a title contender," he said.

Owen also left the door open for Liverpool, but with a caveat: the Merseyside club must get everything right, and he remains unconvinced they are ready to mount a sustained challenge just yet.
