A limited edition £20 banknote bearing an image inspired by Scott McTominay's celebrated overhead kick has been unveiled by the Bank of Scotland, marking Scotland's first World Cup qualification since 1998.

Just 100 notes have been printed, with 50 made available through collector auctions, a prize draw, and two pop-up events in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Proceeds from the auction and prize draw will support Crisis Scotland, a charity working to end homelessness across the country.

The goal that launched a nation

Scotland secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow last November. McTominay opened the scoring with an overhead kick early in the match — a goal that has since entered Scottish football folklore.

The new banknote blends traditional design elements with imagery drawn directly from that moment.

"Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans. Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special."

Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, said the note was designed to honour both Scottish identity and a landmark sporting achievement.

"Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that's rooted in Scottish identity. Like football, banknotes have long been part of our country's story, and this limited edition £20 note combines those two traditions with a modern, creative twist."

Noble added that McTominay's overhead kick is "already regarded as one of the nation's greatest ever goals," describing it as a privilege to bring the image to life in such a distinctive format.

How to get one

The online auction runs until 11:00 on Friday 26 June, with the prize draw open until the same time. Fans in Glasgow and Edinburgh can also visit pop-up locations, where guessing the correct combination of numbers to unlock a vault earns them one of the collectible notes.

World Cup 2026 ahead

Scotland are set to face Haiti on 14 June in Boston, Morocco on 19 June in Boston, and Brazil on 24 June in Miami. The 2026 FIFA World Cup features 48 teams and runs from 11 June to 19 July across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
