Shankland Set for Free Rangers Move as Scottish Transfer Gossip Heats Up

Lawrence Shankland is on his way to Rangers on a free transfer, with reports claiming the Heart of Midlothian captain is flying back to Glasgow from holiday to complete a medical and finalise the deal. Rangers have offered the Scotland striker a two-year contract with an option for a third, and are able to sign him without a fee thanks to a clause in his Hearts agreement.

Shankland, who supported Rangers as a boy, has agreed personal terms with the Ibrox club, according to the Scottish Sun. Should the transfer go through, Football Insider reports he could even be handed the captaincy ahead of centre-half Emmanuel Fernandez and midfielder Nicolas Raskin.

More Rangers business

Rangers are also tracking Dundee centre-half Luke Graham, though Football Insider says the Glasgow club must outbid Portsmouth — whose January offer was rejected — to land the 22-year-old this summer.

Meanwhile, Rangers previously turned down a £10 million loan-to-permanent proposal from Monaco for winger Djeidi Gassama in January, but both the 22-year-old and the Ibrox club are reportedly open to revisiting a similar arrangement. Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil, 24, is also set to hold talks with Rangers as his contract winds down following a loan stint at Ipswich Town, who won promotion to the Premier League.

Rangers' pursuit of Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt, 24, could be complicated by Hull City's own promotion to the Premier League. Gelhardt scored 14 goals on loan at Hull this season, making him a more expensive target.

Celtic's transfer picture

At Parkhead, Nigeria striker Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed a desire to remain with Celtic, who hold an option to extend the 29-year-old's deal by a further 12 months. However, talks over converting Marcelo Saracchi's loan from Boca Juniors into a permanent transfer have stalled, and the 28-year-old left-back will return to the Argentine club for the second half of their season.

Celtic could yet pursue Tottenham Hotspur's Alfie Devine if Preston North End fail to activate their purchase clause of £4.5 million before 1 June. The 21-year-old forward has been on the Hoops' radar, and the deadline offers a potential opening.

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has claimed that Japan midfielder Reo Hatate, 28, has fallen out with interim manager Martin O'Neill — an allegation put forward to explain Hatate's recent absence from the team. Celtic have not publicly commented on the claim.

Robbie Keane, who has been linked with the Celtic manager's vacancy, announced his resignation as Ferencvaros head coach after the club finished second behind Gyori ETO in the Hungarian top flight. Keane said he felt "the time is right for me to move on."

Other Scottish football notes

Volendam midfielder Juninho Bacuna, 28, has reflected on a difficult loan spell at Rangers, saying Steven Gerrard's departure from Ibrox prevented him from establishing himself. Bacuna is now focused on helping former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat guide Curacao in a World Cup warm-up fixture against Scotland this month.

Aberdeen striker Kusini Yengi believes he can earn a place in new manager Stephen Robinson's plans, though his future remains uncertain after a loan spell at Cerezo Osaka was cut short by injury. The J-League club are unwilling to pay a fee for the 27-year-old, leaving Aberdeen with a decision over his contract.

Hull City striker Oli McBurnie has brushed aside any suggestion of tension with Scotland head coach Steve Clarke after being omitted from the national squad's World Cup group, insisting there are "no hard feelings" between them.
