Alan Shearer has described Anthony Gordon's impending move to Barcelona as a positive outcome for Newcastle United, arguing that last summer's drawn-out Alexander Isak transfer saga taught the club a hard lesson about handling departures on their own terms.

Barcelona's £69 million move

Barcelona are set to complete the signing of England winger Gordon for a reported fee in the region of £69 million, with the deal finalised within a week of the Premier League season's conclusion. Gordon's performances across Newcastle's 12 Champions League matches in 2025-26 — in which he scored 10 goals — are understood to have convinced the Catalan club to part with the substantial fee.

Gordon, who has been named in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, featured in both legs of Newcastle's round of 16 exit against Barcelona earlier in the competition.

'Scarred by the Isak situation'

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer — Newcastle's all-time leading scorer — drew a direct line between the club's willingness to sell now and the turbulence caused by Isak's late departure to Liverpool last summer.
