Slot's Sullen Send-Off Sums Up a Troubling Season at Anfield

As Liverpool's wretched 2025/26 campaign drew to a close with a 1-1 draw against Brentford, The Kop turned to Bob Marley — singing that every little thing is gonna be alright. It felt less like conviction and more like collective therapy.

Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson walked out of Anfield for the last time as Liverpool players, two figures central to the most trophy-laden era in the club's modern history. With several more departures expected this summer, the sense of an era ending hung heavy over Merseyside.

A season of failure — no other word will do

Sixty points and a fifth-place finish is not a badge of honour. To put it in perspective, that same tally would have earned ninth place last season and no European football at all. It is, in fact, the lowest points total to secure Champions League qualification since 2003/04 — the year Gérard Houllier's reign ended in that famously amicable Anfield photoshoot.

Liverpool won just 17 league games all season, their lowest win percentage in a decade. They failed to win any of their final four matches, and across all competitions managed only four victories from their last 14 outings. Champions League football next season is secured, but that is the floor, not the ceiling.

Slot's bench moment did not go unnoticed

Manager Arne Slot has said he is confident he can win back fan support next season — yet his conduct at the final whistle gave supporters fresh cause for concern. While Salah, Robertson, and their teammates completed a lap of appreciation, Slot remained seated on the bench, apparently alone with his thoughts, and did not join in.

It may well have been a genuine desire to give the departing players their moment. But for supporters already questioning his connection with the club, the image of their head coach sitting in isolation — rather than sharing mutual appreciation with the fans — did not sit well.
