Spain's World Cup Squad Breaks With Tradition as Real Madrid Shut Out Entirely

For the first time in recent memory, not a single Real Madrid player features in Spain's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Manager Luis De La Fuente announced his final selection, and the absence of Los Blancos representation marks a notable break from tradition — a direct reflection of the club's difficult season.
Carvajal, Huijsen, and others left behind
Among the most high-profile omissions is Dani Carvajal, who had been one of De La Fuente's most relied-upon defenders in recent campaigns. The veteran right-back's season was derailed by injury, and a lack of match minutes left him outside even the preliminary 56-man pool.
Dean Huijsen, Fran Garcia, Alvaro Carreras, Raul Asencio, and Gonzalo Garcia had all featured in the list of probables, yet none survived the cut to the final squad. Huijsen's exclusion stands out most — De La Fuente had previously used him as a regular starter, but an inconsistent campaign cost him his place.
The Barcelona defender Eric García earned the nod ahead of Huijsen, joining Atlético Madrid's Marc Pubill, Aymeric Laporte, and Pau Cubarsí as Spain's central defensive options. Dani Ceballos, meanwhile, was never seriously in contention for a place.
Premier League stars make the cut
Seven players based in the Premier League have been called up. Arsenal, the reigning English champions, contribute three — goalkeeper David Raya, midfielder Mikel Merino, and Martín Zubimendi. Chelsea's Marc Cucurella, Tottenham Hotspur's Pedro Porro, Manchester City's Rodri, and Crystal Palace's Yeremy Pino complete the English top-flight contingent.
Spain's path at the tournament
The 2010 World Cup winners open their 2026 campaign on June 15th against Cabo Verde, before taking on Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the group stage.
