Super Eagles Drawn in Group L for AFCON 2027 Qualifiers

Nigeria's path to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has been confirmed, with the Super Eagles placed in Group L alongside Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau for the qualifying campaign.
The tournament is set to be hosted across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and Nigeria will be among the favourites to secure one of the group's qualification spots. However, the draw presents a set of opponents capable of making life difficult — particularly in away fixtures.
Group L breakdown
On paper, Nigeria are the strongest side in Group L, but the group is far from straightforward. Tanzania, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau have all shown in recent years that African football's lower-ranked nations can upset established sides, especially on home soil.
Former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has already sounded a note of caution, describing Tanzania, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau as stubborn opponents who will not make qualification easy for Nigeria.
Key players and qualification prospects
The Super Eagles will rely on their core of experienced players as they look to build momentum through the qualifying rounds. Away trips — particularly to Antananarivo and Bissau — are expected to be among the most testing fixtures on the schedule.
Nigeria have historically qualified for AFCON with relative comfort, but the continent's growing competitive depth means no group can be taken for granted. The Super Eagles will be targeting an early confirmation of their place at the 2027 finals.
Coach Eric Chelle has also been expanding his squad options, recently calling up additional players ahead of the Unity Cup, signalling a broader assessment of talent available for the qualification campaign ahead.
