Vancouver Police Reject Motorcade Request for FIFA President Infantino

Vancouver's police force has refused a request to provide FIFA president Gianni Infantino with a police motorcade during his visit to British Columbia for a series of FIFA meetings, the Vancouver Police Department confirmed on Wednesday.

Deputy Chief Don Chapman made clear that such privileges are not extended to sports administrators.

"Formal motorcades where traffic is stopped are reserved for heads of state,"
Chapman said in a statement. "As the FIFA executive do not meet Internationally Protected Person (IPP) standards that would warrant such an escort [closing roads, intersections, not adhering to traffic devices, etc.], the request was declined."

FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Vancouver hosting World Cup matches

FIFA's leadership is gathered in Vancouver this week ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the city serving as one of 16 match venues for the tournament. The competition, co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, runs from June 11 to July 19.

FIFA's Congress — a full assembly of representatives from all member associations — is scheduled for Thursday.

A busy week for FIFA

The meetings have already produced several significant announcements. FIFA confirmed changes to the yellow card accumulation suspension rule for the World Cup, announced additional prize money for participating teams, and granted eligibility to the exiled Afghan women's national team to return to international competition.
