Vipotnik Set to Be Championship's Most Coveted Summer Exit

Zan Vipotnik's future at Swansea City is shaping up to be the defining transfer story of the summer, with the Slovenian striker's remarkable campaign attracting significant interest from clubs across Europe and the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has scored 23 Championship goals this season — six more than the next best, Haji Wright — and is on course to claim the division's golden boot heading into Saturday's final-day fixture against Charlton Athletic. In all competitions, Vipotnik has netted 25 times for the Welsh club.

A pattern that rarely favours loyalty

History in the Championship tells a clear story: strikers who light up the second tier without winning promotion almost always move on — and often for substantial fees. Swansea head coach Vitor Matos has been direct on the matter, stating that if the club sells Vipotnik, it will only be for "proper money."

Recent seasons offer compelling precedents. Viktor Gyokeres departed Coventry City for Sporting CP in the summer of 2023 for a reported £20 million, despite entering the final year of his contract, after the club fell short in the play-offs. Emmanuel Latte Lath scored 16 goals for Middlesbrough in that same campaign, added 11 more in the first half of 2024-25, and eventually moved to Atlanta United for £22.5 million in February last year at the age of 26.

Sammie Szmodics claimed the Championship golden boot in 2023-24 with 27 goals for Blackburn Rovers, and was sold to Ipswich Town that summer for £9 million plus add-ons — and he was 28 at the time, four years older than Vipotnik. Crysencio Summerville, who was just 22, joined West Ham United for more than £25 million after Leeds United's play-off final defeat. Chuba Akpom, 27 and with only a year remaining on his contract, left Middlesbrough for Ajax in a deal worth up to £12.2 million following a 28-goal Championship campaign.

More recently, Borja Sainz joined Porto for over £14 million after scoring 18 league goals for Norwich City, while striker Josh Sargent moved to Toronto FC in February this year for more than £20 million.

A free transfer that looks very shrewd

Vipotnik arrived at Swansea from Bordeaux on a free transfer following the French club's financial collapse. He managed only 7 goals in his first season in Wales, making his current tally all the more striking. The club's hierarchy will be relieved that they chose not to sell him in what would have been a cut-price deal last summer, despite serious interest at the time.

A new contract signed in March has strengthened Swansea's negotiating position considerably. Matos has been effusive about how Vipotnik's all-round game has developed alongside his goalscoring.

"A striker lives for goals so we are really happy for him. Doing what he does and understanding that if he adds the pressing and counter-pressing to his game, he becomes a machine. I think that's what he is doing now,"

Matos said following Swansea's weekend draw at Norwich, in which Vipotnik converted from the penalty spot.

Where might he go?

Continental clubs were tracking Vipotnik last summer, and interest returned during the January window. Reports from Portugal have linked both Sporting and José Mourinho's Benfica with summer bids. Clubs from the upper reaches of the Championship and the lower end of the Premier League have also been mentioned.

Vipotnik himself has made no secret of his ambitions. In an interview with BBC Sport Wales earlier this month, he was candid about where he wants to end up.

"I would like to play one day in the Premier League, [whether that is] with Swansea or with another club, God will decide,"

he said.

Swansea, whose best realistic hope this season is a top-10 finish, will await concrete offers once the transfer window opens in mid-June. Should Saturday's visit from Charlton prove to be Vipotnik's final appearance at the club, few inside Welsh football would be shocked.
