Wharton's Conference League Masterclass Piles Pressure on Tuchel Over World Cup Snub

Adam Wharton delivered one of the performances of the Conference League final on Wednesday — and the timing could not have been more awkward for England head coach Thomas Tuchel, who had left the Crystal Palace midfielder out of his FIFA World Cup 2026 squad.
The 22-year-old controlled the heart of midfield across 90 minutes as Crystal Palace faced Rayo Vallecano at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, completing the vast majority of his passes — many directed into the final third — winning key duels, and losing possession just once throughout the entire match.
Wharton's role in the opening goal
Wharton's influence extended beyond mere statistics. It was he who created the opening for Crystal Palace's first goal, probing forward to draw a save from goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, whose parry fell directly to Jean-Philippe Mateta to convert.
After the full-time whistle, Wharton addressed his World Cup omission with remarkable composure. "That's just part of football. It was never a guarantee I was going to go," he said. "I'm not going to sit here and cry about it. I don't really dwell on them things too much. It's not the end of the world, I'm still young. Hopefully there's other tournaments and World Cups that I can go to in the future."
Henderson's place questioned
Tuchel's decision to take 35-year-old Jordan Henderson to the tournament — a player who has started just over half of Brentford's Premier League matches this season — has drawn scrutiny since the squad was announced. Henderson brings 88 England caps and considerable experience, but has not featured at a major tournament since 2022, having been absent from Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 plans.
Wharton was not the only notable absentee. Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire described himself as "shocked and gutted" after being dropped, having been part of Tuchel's squad for the March international window.
Whether Henderson justifies his place on the pitch in the United States, Canada, and Mexico remains to be seen. If his minutes prove limited — or his impact minimal when used — Tuchel may face uncomfortable questions about a selection that already looks harder to defend after Wharton's commanding night in Leipzig.
